Austin Dam and the Bayless Paper Factory Ruins

Along route 872 in Potter county is a small historical marker to notify

The second biggest flood in Pa occurred in the first part of last century due to corporate negligence.  The Bayless Paper company of Potter County built their  massive dam in 1900.  When built the dam was an engineering marvel measuring 534 ' Long and 50' high.

In January 1910 Bayless Dam was starting to show weakness as it bowed from the massive load of the water.   The water levels on the opposite side of the dam showed water was leaking under the dam as well as over the sides.   The entire structure was in jeopardy.  To relieve some of the pressure a section of the dam was blasted away.  The pressure continued to build and cracks were beginning to show.

On September 30 1911 the Bayless Dam finally gave way causing a massive flood in the town of Austin.   78 lives were lost as well as Millions of dollars in damages. Quite impressive considering the flood occurred in 1911!!  Over the years the area became known as the "Austin Dam".    The shell of the dam is still visible today as well as the ruins of the Bayless paper factory.  Take a look at the photo album.
